Oft Overlooked Home Details

There are some home details that you always notice: the color of your house, that big painting on the wall, the quality of furniture in your living room. There are other details, often overlooked, that really elevate a house from just nice to truly beautiful.

Windows

There’s nothing more off-putting than having the wrong windows on a house. A blank pane where there should be colonial grid windows can make your house look like it came directly from the depths of the uncanny valley. It’s a small thing, and you might not even be able to put your finger on exactly what is off at first, but once you notice them, you won’t be able to stop noticing them.

Lighting

Lighting is important, and lighting fixtures can make or break the styling of both interior and exterior spaces. It’s not just a question of how much light they put out and where the lighting falls, but the style of the light itself. Make sure that the fixtures are consistent, or at least harmonious, with the rest of your styling. Don’t forget to consider the bulbs themselves: their warmth or lack of warmth can make a huge difference too.

Roofs

The roof over your head is more than just a way to keep the rain off, it’s the crowning glory of your home. Consider what kind of roofing is going to be most in keeping with the style of your house. Terra cotta tiles will look out of place on a ranch home, and asphalt tiling will look tacky on a colonial revival. Don’t ignore the importance of roofing when it comes to home design. These may seem like small things in the grander scheme but that doesn’t mean they aren’t important. Periods and commas are very small things, but sentences wouldn’t be complete without them.
